Welcome to our Early Years Foundation Stage

At Higher Openshaw Community School we have a Nursery and Reception classes within our EYFS.  This year, our Reception and Year 1 cohorts are mixed . If you would like more information on this, please click here.

We understand that the experiences children have in the foundation stage have an enormous impact on their future life experiences, so we strive to provide the best learning opportunities for our children.

The EYFS team ensures that every day is a learning day filled with knowledge, happy times and enjoyable learning experiences. We teach children how to be ‘Ready, Respectful and Safe’ within their learning environments and build a place where we take care of ourselves, each other, our school and our community.

The EYFS team strongly believe  that play is essential. Through play, children develop language skills, their emotions and creativity, social and intellectual skills.   â€˜Play’  enables children to ‘have a go’, build their independence and ‘get involved’ with their learning.  Every classroom in our EYFS has ‘continuous provision’.

Children in our EYFS spend a considerable amount of time learning outdoors. We believe that being outdoors has a positive impact on children's sense of well-being and it helps children's development as it gives children the opportunity to do things in different ways. Our calming EYFS Garden gives children first-hand experiences with nature- growing food, learning about the weather, seasons and the natural world.

Tapestry

The Early Years  is  a fun, action-packed and busy learning environment. From messy play and first steps to learning phonics and new games, there's so much for children to do, learn and take in each day.

We use software called 'Tapestry' to capture  and to record all the learning and fun of children's early years education, as well as monitor their development and learning.  The child's journal is shared with their parents, who are able to see special moments and view their child's progress.

Tapestry can be accessed on your phone and we are here to help if you require some support in setting this up.
