Higher Openshaw Community School PE and Sports Grant

For the academic year 2024/25, Higher Openshaw Community School received a total allocation of £18,666. The funding was used to support a whole-school development focus on raising the profile of PE, increasing participation, and ensuring all pupils access high-quality PE and physical activity, both within and beyond the curriculum.

1. Engagement in Physical Activity

We ensured every pupil took part in regular physical activity. Investments were made in sensory circuits, playground markings, and active play equipment so that movement became a daily part of school life. Breakfast, lunchtime, and after-school clubs provided structured opportunities to be active and supported emotional regulation. These initiatives helped children develop healthy habits, improve their wellbeing, and embed physical activity into everyday routines. Moving forward, we will continue to expand staff-led opportunities to ensure physical activity remains a core part of every child’s school experience.

2. Raising the Profile of PE and Sport

PE and sport played a central role in our school community. Achievements were celebrated through assemblies, intra-house competitions, and pupil leadership opportunities. Sports leaders promoted active lifestyles and encouraged their peers to participate fully. These opportunities raised motivation and fostered a culture of pride in sport. Recognising achievement in PE also linked to our wider school values of teamwork, resilience, and ambition. We plan to build on this by expanding pupil-led events and increasing celebration opportunities across the year, ensuring PE and sport remain high-profile, inspiring areas of school life.

3. Staff Confidence and Skills

We strengthened the quality of PE by investing in staff development. A specialist PE coach worked alongside teachers, providing training and mentoring to improve planning, delivery, and assessment. Resources such as the PE Passport supported consistency across school. Specialist training also equipped staff to meet the needs of pupils with SEND, making PE inclusive for all. As staff confidence and subject knowledge grew, so did the quality of provision for our pupils. Our long-term goal is to sustain these skills across the school, embedding inclusive and ambitious PE practice for every child.

4. Broadening Sporting Opportunities

Our PE curriculum offered pupils a wide range of activities beyond traditional sports. This included Forest School sessions, which promoted active outdoor learning, as well as inclusive opportunities such as boccia. Younger pupils benefited from balance bikes to develop coordination and confidence. By offering diverse activities, we enabled pupils to discover new skills and interests, ensuring that everyone could participate at their own level. This variety supported physical, emotional, and social development. We are committed to embedding outdoor learning and inclusive approaches long-term, ensuring all pupils can find joy in being active.

5. Competitive Sport Participation

We provided pupils with opportunities to develop teamwork, resilience, and ambition through competition. Children took part in half-termly matches, local tournaments, and cluster events, supported by our PE Lead and partners such as Dream Big. These opportunities enabled all pupils, including those with SEND, to represent their school and experience the pride of competing. Internal competitions further embedded a culture of healthy competition and inclusion. To sustain this, we will continue to strengthen partnerships, increase access to events, and further develop our internal competitive calendar, ensuring all pupils benefit from participation in competitive sport.
